Containers constitute a kind of materiality that we scarcely ever talk about when discussing material culture. And yet, containers are among the most vital of all things, for the role they play in organizing other things and for the capacity they have to manipulate the temporalities of those things. Ironically, containers are prominent in the mountains of trash we now produce. Taking inspiration from the literature on material culture and on patterns of mass consumption, this paper mused on the role of containers in human societies both past and present.
