Jelica Nuccio is a distinguished leader, educator, and advocate within the DeafBlind community, internationally recognized for her foundational contributions to the development and propagation of ProTactile (PT) language. She earned her B.A. in Biology from Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and an M.A. in Public Health from Emory University. Nuccio’s extensive career spans nearly four decades dedicated to advancing the autonomy of, and communication access for, DeafBlind individuals. She served as the first DeafBlind Director of the Seattle DeafBlind Service Center (DBSC) and co-authored a pioneering curriculum for Support Service Providers (SSP). As the founder of Tactile Communications, she provides critical training rooted in ProTactile philosophy. Her professional roles have also included research coordination, advocacy, and job development, along with significant lobbying efforts for DeafBlind rights at both state and federal levels. Currently, she serves as a consultant on various worldwide projects aimed at advancing ProTactile education and DeafBlind empowerment, continuing her impactful work on a global scale.
