Katherine Williams works in and across the fields of early modern English drama, critical disability studies, and theatre and performance studies. Her first book, Unfixable Forms: Disability, Performance, and the Early Modern English Theater (Cornell, 2021), explores disability as an unruly cultural concept, an unstable register of dramatic convention, and a lightning rod for virtuosic performance in Shakespeare’s theatre. Other writing—on dramatic character and memetic repetition, crip time and theatrical temporality, and adaptation as idiosyncratic experiment in playwriting—has appeared or is forthcoming in Shakespeare Quarterly, English Literary History, Early Theatre, Shakespeare Bulletin, and Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies, among others. She edited the 1605 play Eastward Ho, by George Chapman, Ben Jonson, and John Marston, for The Routledge Anthology of Early Modern Drama (2020), and guest-edited a “Disability Performance and Global Shakespeare” special issue of the Shakespearean International Yearbook (2024). As scholar and dramaturg, she maintains an active practice of artistic collaboration focused on access aesthetics, and she was Co Artistic Lead of The Apothetae Residency at The Public Theater (NYC), 2023-25. She is completing a book tentatively titled Shakespeare and the Dramaturgy of Disability and working on a monograph about the early modern history play without Shakespeare.
