Martin Stokes writes on the music of the circum-Mediterranean, with a broad interest in cities, environments, affective politics, and belonging, and a particular focus on Turkey/Türkiye and Egypt. He is currently PI of the “Beyond 1932” project at King’s College London, researching the archival and sonic legacies of post-Ottoman modernism across the region. His book The Republic of Love: Cultural Intimacy and Popular Music (Chicago 2010) won the Alan Merriam Prize, and Music and Citizenship (Oxford 2023) won the Bruno Nettl Prize, both from the Society for Ethnomusicology. He was awarded the Dent Medal by the Royal Musical Association in 2010 and elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 2012. He has taught at the Queen’s University of Belfast, the University of Chicago, Oxford University, and has been a visiting professor at Boğaziçi University, the University of California, Berkeley (where he gave the Bloch Lectures in 2013), and the University of Copenhagen. His work has been supported by major grants and fellowships from the ERC/UKRI and the Leverhulme Trust, among others. He plays qanun with Oxford Maqam and has been a member of the International Workshop in Theory and Sound collective since 2022.
