Artist Paul Walde addresses environmental issues including non-human activity and communication, global warming, deforestation, endangered species, and land use. Walde trained as a painter, and music and sound compositions have been a prominent feature in his artworks. He is known for interdisciplinary performance works staged in natural environments; documentation of these often become media installations. Recent exhibitions include: Weather Events at the Grand Forks Art Gallery (2024); Glacial Resonance at McIntosh Gallery in London Ontario (2024) and the Kamloops Art Gallery (2023); Alaska Variations at Indexical, Santa Cruz, CA (2022); and HYPER-POSSIBLE: The 3rd Coventry Biennial at the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum, Coventry, UK (2021–2022). Walde is Professor of Visual Arts at the University of Victoria. He is a member of the collective Hase’, which works closely with the Awi’nakola Foundation.
