Marc Berman runs the Environmental Neuroscience Lab, which is interested in how the physical environment affects the brain and behavior. Understanding the relationship between individual psychological and neural processing and environmental factors lies at the heart of his research. The lab utilizes brain imaging, behavioral experimentation, computational neuroscience, and statistical models to quantify the person, the environment, and their interactions. One of his most notable studies examined the impact that adding trees to a city had on a person’s health and happiness. A finding from his lab shows that brief interactions with natural environments (such as a walk in a park) can improve memory and attention by 20 percent. In addition, he and his collaborators have shown that more efficient brain networks are linked to enhanced self-control throughout the life span.
