Sonia Hernandez

Biography

Sonia L. Hernandez majored in Human Nutrition at the Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico, and is a registered dietitian from the same university. She got received a M.A. and Ph.D. in Human Nutrition and Metabolic Biology at The University of Columbia in the City of New York, training under Darrell Yamashiro and Jessica Kandel. Dr. Hernandez’ postdoctoral work focused on protective factors from vascular complications of diabetes at Joslin Diabetes Center, Harvard Medical School, with George King and Hillary Keenan. Dr. Hernandez then joined The University of Chicago Surgery department where she is currently Research Associate Professor. Dr. Hernandez co-founded the STEM-Out Mexico program in 2018, training graduate students and postdocs in curriculum design to implement active learning courses for high school and college students in Mexico.

Dr. Hernandez is a member of the North American Vascular Biology Association (NAVBO) and American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).
